Remembering 9/11

Remembering 9/11
Jet planes crashed into buildings.
Smoke billowed from falling towers.
From cushy recliners we watched news clips,
learning of heroic rescue attempts.
Brave airline passengers
prevented another attack.

Our President held his wife’s hand in church
singing hymns, praying,
gaining strength to move forward.
Chapels across the country filled with record masses.
America became unified, such as my generation
had never known.
For a time, we were one.
Hope grew from fear,
Love grew from hate,
Faith grew from terror.
Though there was evil, we turned to God-
a nation bowed its head in prayer.
May we not soon forget.
